As the Autumn colors fade from rich red and vibrant yellow into a more

Fall at College Harrington du Canada

subtle hue of brown and gold, we are once again reminded of the change of season that is rapidly approaching the Canadian countryside.  The pumpkins are picked and the jack-o-lanterns are being carved for the upcoming Halloween Holiday.  Students will have the ghoulish opportunity to participate in several holiday activities this weekend.  Pumpkin carving and trick or treating are all part of this weekend’s festivities and of course, lots of hockey is scheduled for the teams of College Harrington du Canada.

Just as we see the change in our environment, we also witness the change in the attitudes and skills of our players.  Students arrive at Harrington as individuals and quickly develop into a team.

Players continue to learn the strengths and the weaknesses of each other and how to interact with one another.  This process is the key to developing the strong team approach that produces results on the scoreboard.  The process is happening for our teams and it is very gratifying to see the students on and off the ice, developing the team approach.

Some of our students also witnessed the team approach to discipline.  After a night of “late for lights out” the Bantam team learned the team approach to cleaning the cafeteria and bonded well together during a penalty writing assignment from Coach Bouchard.  Teaching and reminding students to respect their environment, to respect fellow students and staff, and to respect the rules of the campus, is high on the priority list for our staff.

This week our featured staff member is Ms. Susan Pederson.

Susan Pedersen is our English Literature teacher on the CÉGEP Level. All her school days are filled with epics, poetry, and essay writing, which to any group of young hockey-playing men, would be considered as a subject way off-side. But not for Ms. Pedersen’s students (sorry Susie, for starting a sentence with “but”). They are getting enthused by her true passion, and finding that guys like Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, Dickens, Hemmingway, and Orwell are pretty good on handling that little stick, and are more and more looking like a pretty impressive power-play line. Susan Pederson

When Ms. Pedersen isn’t teaching she studies, researches, or just about reads every book she can lay her hands on. For an outsider, it may seem like a very one-sided life, but for someone, who loves literature as much as Ms. Pederson does, it’s an exciting, challenging, and well-rounded life. Everything anyone, anywhere, can experience, she lives it, from the comfort of her favourite La-Z-Boy.

Ms. Pedersen Profile

And as if living everything anyone can possibly experience (sorry, shouldn’t have started the sentence with “and”) isn’t enough, she really comes to life in her role as being Henry’s mom. Henry is 10 years old, and together they enjoy hiking, riding their bikes, traveling, and turning their home into a botanic garden. Preserving nature is a high priority in the Pedersen family and they are active supporters of Les Amis de la Montagne.

With all this going on, you’d be surprised to find out that Ms. Pedersen also finds time to spend many hours a week together with her intrepid dog Bea. Bea is also Une Ami de la Montagne, so their favourite activity is when they are tramping Mount Royal, especially when they can convince someone else to come along. For a city gal, who loves mountains, can there be a better place to live than in Montréal, the Royal Mountain?

Cold nights are upon us and the first snowfall of the season is right around the corner.

Grab your coat, scarf and hat and head to the rinks this weekend for a full schedule of Harrington Hockey.  Let the teams hear your screams and and may you have treats not tricks, this Halloween!
