Greetings,

Wow, what a weekend!  College Harrington du Canada exploded with excitement as parents filled the hallways on Saturday afternoon.  With well over 100 parents and family members registered, all of the seats were filled and there was standing room only in the back of the general assembly.

It was my pleasure to welcome everyone to our campus and to introduce our administrative staff, teaching staff, and coaching staff.  For me, it was also a parent weekend, but of another kind.  My daughter, Tiffany, came for a visit and during her stay, she spent most of her time taking photos of the events, the people, and our school.  Thank you, Tiffany, for all of the photos that bring our newsletters and our website to life.

Saturday, was a day of déjà-vue, as the parents experienced what it’s like to be an HCC student for a day.  Attending short “lectures” in every classroom, the parents traveled throughout the school and visited all the coaches and teachers. By the end of the school day, these special freshmen had gathered plenty of information from the teachers and also shared their thoughts and comments with their new classmates.

After the meetings in the classrooms, parents and HCC staff enjoyed a social get-together. This opportunity to meet and greet was hosted by our Executive Administrator, Danielle Albini, Harrington’s Head Chef, Mr. Neamodeen Hosein and supported by Mrs. Keightly and her special selection of Sushi. Together with several CÉGEP Senior Students, they orchestrated a fantastic event and I know that everyone enjoyed the time to mingle with each other.

Parent Reception at HCC

Hockey was another highlight of the weekend.  Several families went to the Bell Centre on Saturday night, and enjoyed the atmosphere as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1.  Watching the fanatical bleu-blanc-rouge fans was reportedly well worth the price of a ticket!  The eight HCC games were also real delights, and the icing on the cake was the Midget AA’s impressive win. With a 2-0 deficit going into the 3rd, they really turned it on, scoring the winning goal in the final minutes.

It was an amazing boost for these students to have so many fans in the stands and the feedback from parents was overwhelming.  It was obvious, that students had been working hard during practices and Hockey Director Martin Daoust reminded everyone that over 100 practices remain.

There is plenty of hockey development still to come, before the last ice session of the

school year finishes, late in June.

HCC Hockey Practice
Vinnie Gambini’s Restaurant

The Mamma’s Family coordinated the event and provided a wonderful environment for parents, coaches, and staff to socialize while enjoying a wonderful brunch. Tina and Lawrence Mammas, and Mr. Barry Powless had donated and collected several items. Everything from restaurant gift-certificates and golf course passes to original Gordon Fiddler paintings and a Reebok Helmet, signed by Cammalleri.
Silent Auction

The silent auction was a huge success for the Student Leisure Fund. After a small bidding war, the large autographed picture of Ovechkin and Cary Price got the highest bid, followed by  the game worn, All-Star Game Jersey, signed by Joe Thornton. All in all, over $4,000 dollars was raised.

Before going back home, some families enjoyed a visit to downtown Montreal and the Old Port.  Even in late fall, this area is a crowded tourist magnet with plenty of attractions. La Basilica Notre-Dame, Museum of Archeology, and the Science and Technology Centre compete with restaurants and cafés for the visitor’s attention.

Mr. Haney has asked me to encourage parents to finalize travel plans for the upcoming Holiday Break.  Classes will end on December 17th and student housing will close on December 19th.  All travel itineraries should be emailed immediately to p.haney@harringtoncollege.ca .   It is a huge undertaking for him to coordinate transportation to the airport and train stations for so many students, so please get this information to him a.s.a.p.  Classes will resume on January 5th and all students are expected to be back on campus on January 4th 2011.

Finally, I want to extend a big THANK YOU to all families, who attended our parents’ weekend, and an even bigger THANK YOU to all parents, staff, and student volunteers, who made sure this event, went as smoothly as it did.

Sincerely,

Bjorn
