From the Desk of Bjorn Kinding September 29, 2010

NewspaperGreetings from the Harrington Staff,

This week marks the end of our first full month of classes at College Harrington du Canada.  Much has been accomplished in such a short period of time.

Students are beginning to see the results of their hard work in the classroom and others are discovering their need for more effort and commitment to their studies.

For those of you who are planning to visit Harrington for the “Parents Weekend,” November 26-28th, you will have the opportunity to meet directly with the teachers and get first hand reports from the staff.  For those who will not be travelling to Harrington, we can arrange online meetings, via Skype.  Either way, we are committed to keeping the line of communication open between parents and the teaching staff of College Harrington du Canada.

Last Monday, the two latest additions on the HCC’s teacher’s staff, Marianne Schiedler and Shea Phillips, arranged a visit to the Bell Centre, to watch a game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Florida Panthers. Needless to say, this was a much appreciated initiative and 25 students enjoyed the opportunity to see the NHL teams, live.  This is a great example of teachers and students working together in and out of the classroom.  Thank you, teachers, for your commitment to our students.

This weekend, the Harrington teams play a total of 11 games, and the coaching staff has promised the students a surprise “something” if the college’s total result is over .500. So to all parents and other friends of the Icebergs, come and support your teams this weekend!

Hockey PlayerCool nights and cold rinks, seem to fuel the spirit of our students. However, when it comes to housekeeping, they seem to run out of fuel!

Well, the agreement between our students and Mr. Cioban, the school janitor, to “work together to make our school even cleaner” was not really self-propelled. So this week, the teachers and coaches attacked the problem in a coordinated effort, to ensure the higher standards are met. Teams were assigned to different areas and duties and team leaders were given the authority and responsibility to make sure everyone, “litter-ally”, picks it up.

We continue to encourage our students to keep their living environment up to the standards they set for their hockey! Well, we will keep trying….

Continue to have dialogue with your child. Encourage good study habits and promote homework at appropriate times. The mandatory study time is scheduled after supper, and – even with our students full days of school and hockey – there is still time available to spend on their homework assignments. All it takes is good planning and setting the right priorities.

Sincerely,

Bjorn
